Regular dental cleanings
and polishing is recommended. Our dental suite includes advanced instrumentation
for preventative routine cleanings as well as special procedures such as dental
x-rays and tooth extractions.
Why
Is Regular Cleaning Important?
Imagine what it would
be like if you never brushed your teeth or visited the dentist. Then you can
imagine what it is like for your pet. Your pet may be at risk for developing
gum disease. Bad Breath is not normal in healthy dogs and cats. It is a sign
of an unhealthy mouth. Studies have shown that 80% to 85% of dogs and cats
over the age of two years have gingivitis or periodontal disease.
What
is dental disease?
- Gingivitis is inflammation
of the gum tissue. It can lead to Periodontal Disease, which involves the
supportive structures of the tooth. If left untreated gingivitis can lead
to bone loss, loosening of teeth and eventually loss of the teeth. Gingivitis
begins with plaque buildup.
- Plaque is a combination
of bacteria, plus food debris and saliva. It forms a soft milky-white film
on the teeth and gums. It accumulates on the teeth throughout the day, and
if it is not removed from the teeth, it undergoes a process of mineralization
to form a hard substance called tartar or calculus.
- Tartar is well attached
to the teeth, and once present continues to trap food debris and bacteria.
So, the tartar continues to build in thickness on the teeth. The gums then
become irritated, leading to the breakdown of periodontal tissue.
Signs
of poor dental and oral health:
- persistent bad breath
- sensitivity and pain
around the mouth
- pawing at the mouth
- excessive salivation
- loss of appetite
- difficulty eating
- red, bleeding or receded
gums
- tartar (calculus)
- loose or missing teeth
